Radio News

Radio News was the leading, long-running magazine started in 1919, first for the radio experimenter under the name Radio Amateur News, and soon catering to the burgeoning radio enthusiast/consumer market as radio came of age in the 1920s.

Its editor was the renowned Hugo Gernsback, who immigrated to the U.S. in 1904 from Luxembourg to market an improved dry cell battery he had developed. He accumulated 80 patents in his lifetime, some on the eccentric side. But he is best known as a leading publisher of radio and science magazines and is credited with establishing science fiction as a unique literary form. He wrote an important science fiction novel himself, Ralph 124C 41+, in 1925. He started the magazine Amazing Stories in 1926, the first publication devoted to science fiction. Today's annual science fiction achievement awards are named the Hugo in his honor.

Radio News is collectible for its colorful and imaginative covers alone, but the contents are wonderful as well, embodying a mix of electronics, visionary electronics, and just plain eccentric electronics. After ten years of publishing the magazine, Gernsback lost it in 1929 at the outbreak of the Depression (he also lost Amazing Stories at this time). Radio News continued publishing under new ownership and the editorial leadership of Arthur Lynch, but it lacked the colorful covers and imaginative content that Gernsback had brought to the magazine. Then, with barely a missed issue, Gernsback started his new venture, Radio-Craft Magazine, in July 1929 (which ran through 1948 and then became Radio Electronics) and also added an additional radio magazine, Short-Wave Craft, in 1935.

Gernsback's publications were amazingly extensive. To name a few: Air Wonder Stories, Amazing Detective Stories, Electrical Experimenter, French Humor, Know Yourself, Gadgets, Modern Electrics, Pirate Stories, Radio and Television, Science and Invention, Science Wonder Stories, Sexology, Short-Wave and Television, Television, Television News, Wonder Stories, and Woman's Digest. Gernsback died in 1967 at the age of 83.
