Science and Invention

Science and Invention was officially inaugurated with the August 1920 issue. It was a gradual outgrowth of Electrical Experimenter, that had begun in May 1913 (itself an outgrowth of Modern Electrics). These awere all magazine ventures of the renowned scientist-publisher Hugo Gernsback. Over time Gernsback felt the name Electrical Experimenter did not appeal to the broad audience of interested science readers he wanted to reach. He first added the subtitle of Science and Invention to the cover of Electrical Experimenter back in June 1918. Finally in the July 1920 issue he wrote an article declaring that in the next issue the subtitle and titles would be reversed and that Science and Invention would be the new name going forward. The actual numbering of issues by volume, number, and whole number continued without a break from Electrical Experimenter, and the inside format and columns also remained largely the same.

The magazine continued under Gernsback's leadership until March 1929, when he was forced to declare bankruptcy. It was taken over by Arthur H. Lynch and continued two more years, publishing its final issue in August 1931. Gernsback soon reorganized his finances and resumed publishing a broad range of magazines. To name a few of his lifetime publications: Air Wonder Stories, Amazing Stories, Radio News, Radio-Craft, Radio and Television, Science Wonder Stories, Sexology, Short-Wave and Television, Television, Television News, Wonder Stories, and Woman's Digest. Gernsback died in 1967 at the age of 83, but Gernsback Publications continued to publish such magazines as Popular Electronics until it ceased operations in 2002.
