What equipment do I need to read a G-Book®?

You'll need just two or three things to start reading G-Books:

  1. a computer or other device that can display Adobe PDF files. Unless otherwise noted, G-Books do not use Adobe DRM (digital rights management). Tablet PCs make excellent reading devices; they have big screens yet are relatively light and can be folded into a clipboard form for comfortable armchair or bed reading. E-book readers capable of displaying Adobe pdf files are another option, such as the iRex Iliad. PDAs and Smartphones might not be feasible, depending on the book. Because G-Books are graphical pdfs files, they require about 100 MB of storage per file (you'll probably need an SD or other memory expansion card to store them) and, because they're graphical, the entire page probably won't fit on a small screen. Unless your device enables panning and scrolling of the pages, you'll be limited to G-books whose pages are small enough to display within your device's screen resolution. If you have a device with a small screen, test it by downloading the free G-Book sample before you make a purchase.
  2. a pdf reader: the free, downloadable Adobe Reader, Adobe Acrobat, an Internet Browser with a pdf plug-in, or a third-party pdf viewer. (If you want to annotate your G-Books® with highlighting, notes, etc., try Adobe Reader version 7 or later, or Adobe Acrobat.) You can also test your preferred program with the free G-Book sample.
  3. optionally: a broadband Internet connection, if you want to download G-Books as soon as you purchase them. Because G-Books display each page of a book as a high-resolution image, they are large files, typically 60 to 100 MB. Dialup connections might work if they're very stable, but they're not a very practical way to download these large files and are not officially supported at the G-Books store. Alternatively you can order your G-Books at our store and have them burned to a CD and mailed to you.
